Annunciation (study)

Oil on linen. A study after the early Sienese, working out the problem of how light meets stillness.

The challenge in any Annunciation is not the figures but the air between them. The Sienese masters understood this — the gold ground is not decoration but a kind of silence made visible.

This study was an attempt to find an equivalent silence in oil, without recourse to gilding.
